I have wandered in the dark...
These feet an icy path have trod...
In the silence of the night I walked,
Alone I stalked,
In search of a distant God.
Beside me shadow and unease lept and lay,
but there seemed none beside me save for they.
And my heart lay heavy then, like a thing carved out of stone.
I had see the folly laid by men... about all then,
The mistakes of flesh and bone...
It had opened my young eyes anew, and it had lain my spirit low...
So I wandered now the midnight roads as far as they might go.
I wondered at the light above...
That light was coming from the moon.
She smiled on me with a simple face, a loving face and I...
I was entranced by the sky...
But surely if I tried to reach her, she'd be to high...
...So I walked alone in silence.
I saw an owl swoop and strike...
I paused to marvel at his aim...
He stretched his winds and gave his haunting cry, a wild cry, and I...
I wanted so much then to fly...
But had I tried to follow, I would die...
...So I continued on in silence.
A stream bubbled beside the path... and there was fruit on a passing tree,
Then all around me blessings did abound,
Yes there was peace and pleasure all around...
I watched my fellow man partake in these, and knew I could not stop and join them yet...
I must walk this pathway to its ending...
If I am ever to comfort get.
...But every night must end at dawn,
And every road must reach a bend...
And I discovered on that lonely road... that never once...
Had I walked alone my friend...
For he was with me in each step...
He stood beside me by the trees...
He lead me onward as the swooping owl,
He cried 'walk onward,' as that midnight fowl,
And he was the moonlight... and he was the icy breeze...
My eyes are opened once again...
...Then I step off the road of men.
These feet an icy path have trod...
In the silence of the night I walked,
Alone I stalked,
In search of a distant God.
Beside me shadow and unease lept and lay,
but there seemed none beside me save for they.
